TEAL DAY | May 31

Sexual Violence Awareness Month

  • May is Sexual Violence Awareness Month in Canada, and Teal Day is a local Charlotte County initiative.

  • This past May, our dedicated members of the Charlotte County Abuse network hosted community events to ignite conversations, educate and foster a community of support and understanding and encouraged community members to wear teal on May 31st to support survivors of sexual violence.

  • By wearing teal each year on this day, you are helping spread awareness.

“The Charlotte County Abuse Prevention Network (CCAPN) is asking the community to wear the colour teal on Friday, May 31.

Sam Gullison, CCAPN sexual violence community coordinator, says it’s the national colour for Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

Friday is dubbed ‘Wear Teal Day’. It’s an initiative created by CCAPN to raise awareness, share information, and show support to all survivors of sexual violence in Charlotte County.

“When they’re out in the community and they see a community response of people wearing teal, it can be empowering and validating for them,” said Gullison.

CCAPN also reports there were 38 sexual assaults and other violations reported to RCMP just in Charlotte County.”

Dec 6th Vigil Ceremony - National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

A candlelight vigil was held on December 6th to honour the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day is observed annually to commemorate the 14 women who lost their lives in the École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, Quebec, in 1989.

We lit candles in memory of the victims and stood in solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence. Please join us on this solemn occasion to remember the victims and raise awareness about the issue of gender-based violence.

May 5th Red Dress Day – National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People

  • Red dresses were respectfully placed by the Charlotte County Abuse Prevention Network and by Charlotte County Outreach in efforts to spark conversation surrounding National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) also known as Red Dress Day which is observed on May 5th.

  • Each dress is placed to honour and draw attention to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in Canada. The day serves as a reminder of the ongoing violence faced by Indigenous communities, the urgent need for awareness, and our shared responsibility to take action.

  • By hanging red dresses, we honour the memory of the lives that have been taken. May their spirits continue to lead us in amplifying their voices, continuing to advocate, and demand justice & change.
